“worked well for 3 months” 2010-02-04
By Philip Greenspun (Cambridge, MA USA)
I like the streaming Netflix feature, which is a good thing because that’s the only thing that this player is good for anymore. If you put a DVD into the drive it says “No disc”. Powering the machine off and then back on doesn’t help, but a full unplug/plug in seems to make it more likely to read a disk. Mostly, though, the machine cannot play any physical media.

“Excellent multi-function set top box…” 2010-02-03
By M. Kirven (Pittsburgh, PA)
I did a ton of research online before purchasing this item. Noticed that it was a Top Pick and Editor’s Choice on a numerous different websites. I spent way too much time looking at the different Blu-Ray disc players on the shelf, and found a LG BD390 in the box on Christmas Eve. A lot of the BD players just looked really cheap as far as their construction – the BD 390 had a little bit of heft to it. I was looking for a player that had 1 gig of onboard storage for BD Live – I did not want a usb stick protruding from the front of the player. I also wanted a machine that had fast load times. The BD 390 provided those features and more.

Pros:
Fast load times for Blu-Ray discs – not as fast as an Oppo, but not as expensive.
Great user interface, easy to navigate the on screen menus – good response times.
Wireless networking – not a big deal for me, I use my wired network connection behind the TV.
Build quality – not as robust or heavy as my Toshiba HD-XA2, but still a very attractive, full sized unit.
Streaming options – VUDU looks fantastic in HD. Really like the ability to listen in Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby Digital Surround. Hope they add Pandora soon. Don’t use Netflix or You Tube that much. Access of media files across my network is a great feature also. This box plays pretty much everything I can throw at it.
Picture quality – BD – excellent, SD upconversion is a little soft, but acceptable.
Price – very reasonable for the ability and options this player provides vs. the competition. If you can still find one for under $300, snap it up.

Cons:
No backlit remote, remote provided is really cheap and you need a direct line of sight. I use my Harmony 880.
Flimsy disc tray.
Some reports of lip sync issues – hopefully a firmware upgrade will address this issue for some users.
90 day warranty on labor.

The LG BD 390 has exceeded my expectations for Blu-ray playback and streaming options at a very reasonable price point. I’m a satisfied customer!

“Good Full Featured Player” 2010-02-03
By S. Blatner (Redwood City, CA)
I returned a defective Sony Blu Ray player and replaced it with the BD390. Easy Amazon return with shipping at no cost.

Everything works as advertised. Network setup was a snap. Entered the WEP encryption key on the player, entered the MAC address code on our router (secondary security), and the player hooked up right away. DVDs look great and so far play flawlessly. I did the software update via a flash drive from a wired computer as the update file size is large and slow to download over wireless. We have a separate Roku box, so we are not using the Netflix feature. The BD390 is paired with a new LG 42SL90 LED TV that features Simplelink. So when I turn on the Blu Ray player, the TV automatically turns on and switches the TV input to the BD390, ready to play. Very cool.

“Networking and Support Nightmare” 2010-02-02
By D. Glover
LG support is very friendly, but not very helpful. I had problems from the beginning with the wireless networking and with updating the software. The unit worked fine for playing disks. It would not update its software. The wireless networking worked intermittently, but the unit worked OK when I strung a wire to the router in the next room. I tried updating the software from the network, from a USB drive, and from a CD, but it wouldn’t get past the PREP stage. I tried working with LG for a month, by the time I gave up it was past time for an easy return to Amazon. Amazon charged me $55 to return it plus the shipping back. From now on, I’m buying my major electronics from COSTCO so that I don’t have to worry about getting stuck with unreasonable return charges.

I bought a ROKU box instead, and I’m very happy with that. I don’t think the Blu-ray is worth the money yet.

“So far so good” 2010-02-02
By E. Barnes (Brunswick, VA)
Wow after reading all the 1 star reviews I’m scared about this unit. I’ve had it for about 3 weeks now and everything works great. The upconvert on the DVD’s is the most amazing part, I think i’ll just keep buying DVD’s instead of Blu-rays. Don’t want to gynx it but I’m glad I bought the 2yr protection plan from Best Buy, cause it seems they are failing after 3 months, but for right now I’m a beleiver, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
