“Replaced my Sony DVD Player – Nice Basic Blu-Ray” 2010-02-03
By Diana de Avila (Malta, NY USA)
I had a beautiful Sony DVD player that has begun to get more finicky with time. I have used a Skip Dr. and head cleaner and this still does not seem to affect the noises and skipping happening in the player. I received it second-hand … but it was time to go.
My dream Blu-Ray player is the PlayStation 3 250 GB. But for a quick replacement, I was offered a 1 day “Gold Box” deal from Amazon to get this Sylvania for $89.00. I could not pass on the offer to get a Blu-ray player at this price if for nothing else … a hold over.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that this player seems durable and basic (enough for my needs). I have a nice, large projection TV but realized it did not have the HDMI input to allow for a more dynamic picture. This Blu-ray player DOES have that port so that is a definite plus for those with newer TV model.
For the money, I felt I couldn’t beat it. It set up very easily and played a Blu-Ray disc nicely. It took a few more seconds than a regular DVD to load — just enough time to grab a soda. This was not a deal breaker for me. I was looking for something simple, economical and reliable until I end up buying some iteration of the PS3 to play my Blu-Ray discs on. Truthfully, I only have one at this point … but if I find that the picture is so much more AWESOME, I will replace some of my favorites. Today I watched the “Sex in the City” movie and thought it was nice — not a heck of a lot different than the normal HiDef but awfully nice.
As a replacement to my dying DVD player and a go-between between my eventual PS3 … this is a winner.
5 stars.

“Nice player for the money” 2010-02-03
By Gregory Topor (NYC USA)
I’ve been looking for inexpensive BD player for our bedroom. Got this one for $89, so far it’s been great. It actually starts/loads faster than Pioneer BDP-51FD in our living room which was over twice as much on price. Connecting it was a snap and after watching WW II in HD and Blood Diamond i can say I’m very happy with this unit. Looks good too.

“Wouldn’t even turn on” 2010-01-30
By Laina Cronin (HUNTLEY, IL, US)
I would love to review this player, however it only powered on for about 10 seconds before shutting off with our disc inside. After calling Sylvania customer service, we were given poor information as to locating a service center for a warranty repair. So far, not a great 1st experience in the world of blu-ray.

“Good budget player” 2010-01-25
By BPRJam (Minnesota)
I’ve had this play for about 6 months, and like it. The picture is good, DVD up-conversion is solid, and the optical audio output works well. The remote feels flimsy, but the buttons you use most often are easy to find.
So far, I’ve not had a single disk that this player would not play. I should point out that I’ve only run about 6-10 blu-ray disks through it. The DVD up-conversion is good enough that I usually don’t pay the premium for blu-ray rentals. (I have a 42″ plasma.)
My only complaint is the boot-up time is long, and the load times on blu-ray disks is also long. Compared to my older DVD player, I feel I have to wait forever for the disk tray to eject after powering on the player. But for close to a hundred bucks, I’m not complaining too loudly.
Overall, a good budget player.
