“The best player available…bar none!” 2010-02-02
By James Hodgson (Missouri bootheel)
Consumer Reports, CNET, many others…all agree, this is the best.

This player takes all formats. Many who are new to BluRay movies do not realize that there are many formats of BluRay: A, B, C, etc. This plays them all, also almost any other format.

Speed!!! Some BluRay players are incredibly slow (loading, restarting, rewinding). This is a pain. Oppo is the fastest on the market.

All forms of output, both audio and video. HDMI is the best for both. For sound Coaxial, then TOS link, then composite. This has any AV connection that you choose.

Easy to use remote control.

Attractive, small profile.

This gem is pricier than most. However, if you want the best, this is the one to get.
I have owned a Magnavox, a Sony, and a Panasonic. This is the player I will be buried with.

“Great Quality but Lacks Features” 2010-02-01
By Fils
The Oppo BDP-83 blu ray player is probably the best built player on the market in its price range. The hardware feels very sturdy and reliable. Disc load times are excellent, as is picture quality and sound. From a ‘build’ standpoint, I don’t believe a buyer could do better. That said, I returned my player due its minimalistic feature set. No streaming video of any kind with no firm plans to add any via a firmware update (exchanged emails with Oppo customer service). And no wireless. After having this player for a few days, I returned it and bought the LG BD-390. Picture and sound are comparable to the Oppo, but it also includes built-in wireless N and streams Netflix, YouTube, Vudu, and others. Its feature set is superior to the Oppo and costs $200 less. But this is not an LG BD-390 review. So back to the pros/cons of the Oppo.

Pros:
Superior build quality
Fast load times
Great picture/sound

Cons:
No streaming video w/no plans to add
No wireless
Expensive for feature set

Overall I was disappointed with the lack of feature set and that’s what drove my return. If you don’t need or want that, I would highly recommend this player for anyone looking for a standalone player.

“Bought it for the sound, not the blue ray” 2010-02-01
By Steven A. Fisher (Burbank, CA)
This is a very interesting product. This Oppo is one great blue ray player. But I don’t have many movies on blue ray because they’re too expensive. What I do love to do is listen to music, and play all the dozens of DVDs on my hi-def tv.

This player is great with old DVDs. I watched The Incredibles last night. Not the blue ray version, the regular version. You figure every tv and dvd player can make animation look good. This player shows you all the detail that the animators put into the movie. I couldn’t believe the details that came out using this player. My girlfriend thought it was a blue ray! If you have a new flat screen tv you need an Oppo to upconvert those discs to 1080p. That alone is worth the price of this player.

Anyway, I didn’t even buy the player for dvds either, I bought it for listening to music. It plays cds like a $1,000 cd player. The soundstage is massive, with great imaging for you stereo enthusiasts. The sound is not laid back, very forward. It can play SACDs too! HDDVDs too! Picture files too! I can only imagine what this player would sound like in a good 5.1 or 7.1 system.

Having bought a lot of electronics over the years, this Oppo player is the best money I ever spent on a product.

“A Very Versatile and Great Sounding Blu-ray Disc Player” 2010-01-30
By Penmouse
The following comments are from my husband who wanted this Blu-ray player. He received this as a gift.

I became interested in the Oppo BDP-83 because I was looking for a Blu-ray player that could play my Super Audio CDs and DVD Audio discs as well and the Oppo was the only one I found for under $4k. I did some research on the Oppo Blu-ray player and the Oppo DVD player (also SACD and DVD-A capable) and heard almost entirely good things. If it was half as good as the reviews it would be a steal for $500.

Upon receiving the player I was first impressed by the packing which was very strudy and used high density closed cell foam which was actually capable of absorbing significant shock and vibration instead of the usual styrofoam. The unit was also packed in a cloth carrying case (a nice touch but of questionable utility). The unit also came with 2 Blu-ray set-up discs and, wonder of wonders, an HDMI cable.

Setup was easy for so flexible device and even offered a variety of display configurations including the ability to keep 3:4 formatted programming in the correct aspect ratio. There is quite a bit op optional set-up capability but as yet I haven’t felt the need to use it, however, playing the two set-up discs provided a nice confirmation that my system was set up properly.
I cannot fully assess the video performance of the player because of the limited capability of my 720p television but the picture is superior to that from my satellite dish. It plays pretty much anything that I have to put in it Except DVD-RAM including my recordings on DVD-R and DVD+R discs (I don’t use and haven’t tried DVD -/+RW discs).

Now to the audio performance. In a word outstanding! While the unit does pass high def audio from Blu-ray discs as well as DVD-A and SACD digital audio to my receiver for decoding, I have found that the Oppo does a better job of digital to analog conversion than my receiver. My receiver is a Yamaha RSV-663 who’s D to A performance I had always been satisfied with but the Oppo is significantly better. As compared to using the internal D to A converter of the Yamaha, the multichannel direct input from the Oppo yields an increase in inner detail, enhanced imaging, and a sense of space that is very impressive. It’s not that the Yamaha isn’t good, the Oppo is just better. As an Audio Player alone, the Oppo is more than worth the price.

The Oppo also has some data reading capability. It reads GIF, PNG and JPG pictures and plays MP3, MP3 Pro, and WMA audio from Data CDs, DVDs, or, through the USB port, from a thumb drive or even an SDI card (with a USB adapter). It also reads digital movies from the USB device though I haven’t tried that yet. It does not, unfortunately, read wave files, either the standard or high definition variety.

The inability of the Oppo to read wave files, especially 24 bit 96 kilohertz and higher high definition wave files is my biggest quibble with this otherwise outstanding component. That aside, the Oppo is a truly outstanding multi format player that does almost everything well and high definition audio wonderfully.
